International trade

International trade is often regarded as an engine of growth for developing countries. Yet, there is no agreement over the most pro-development trade rules. In reality, trade liberalisation often impacts negatively on sustainable agricultural development and the achievement of food security in developing countries. If poverty reduction and sustainble development are to be achieved, the definition of a global trade system must take into account the specificities of agricultural systems (often family-based), as well as the muti-functional role played by agriculture in developing countries.
