National agricultural research

National agricultural research institutes play a crucial role in developing locally adapted technologies. They are often underfunded and have difficulties to link to the international research system. They often also lack funds for long-term participatory activities and are therefore often quite isolated from the field realities. Linking national research systems to the international system and improving the link between the national research and extension systems with the farmers are primary concerns of SDC in this field.
